Time To Party

The clocks have gone back which means the days become shorter and the nights grow longer.  How to spend the long nights?  Wrapped up reading a book by an open fire or embracing the party season with a full diary of events.  The answer can only be, PARTY!

The high street is full of sequined, laced, velvet luxury at this time of the year.  Stunning frocks with some jaw dropping high end prices to match.  Do you blow all your budget on one show stopping outfit or pull last years glittery if slightly crumpled number from the bottom of the wardrobe?

Let me share a secret with you, this week sees the launch of the Christmas Campaign at British Red Cross Retail, with Red Cross Charity shops up and down the country starting with a week of Eveningwear as the focus.

British Red Cross Charity shops have been saving eveningwear all year for this week, storing, steaming and pricing the best of glitzy, glamorous, get ups including designer labels, brand new items and vintage finds.

All 350 British Red Cross Shops across the country will be taking part with a focus on EVENINGWEAR and accessories this whole week.  Subsequent weeks will reveal Christmas Decorations, Toys, and Table Decorations.

If like me you have more than one special event in your diary get down to your nearest British Red Cross Shop to find your whole party wardrobe for less.

Did I mention all profits go to the charity, to be used to help people in crisis, whoever they may be?  Charity shop fashion gives so much back, everyone wins with slow fashion that is recycled, sustainable, and ecofriendly.

All dresses and jumpsuits in this piece are from British Red Cross Shoreham By Sea.

Honest Christmas Gift Guide for Him

Whoa! It’s December. We have bought and dressed the tree.  Lit the fire and candles and we are beginning to feel more than a little festive over at the Boston Abode.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time looking at gifts, actually press days started in July.  So I can’t deny I started looking early.  That said, it’s always a bit of a brain drain to figure out what Mr B wants.  He has always worked with fashion accessories so I’ve always got to think one step ahead of your standard Christmas jumper, socks and cufflinks combo.

So, without giving too much away here we go for this year’s must have Man sized Christmas movers and shakers.

For Him

1. Ralph Lauren Polo socks, pack of three, Mainline.

2. Ultimate car kit, Simoniz.

3. Braun Multi Groomer.

4. Grey jumper, Red Cross Shop, Shoreham.

5. Knitted tie, Cos.

6. Guy Martin, Worms to Catch, Amazon.

7. Beanie hat, Cos

8. Wax fishing jacket, Red Cross Shop Shoreham.

9. Monogram Cufflinks, Boston and Boston

10. Croco Visiting Card Case, Ettinger

Hope you like my suggestions, click the links for more details.

Happy Shopping

Ettinger – The Sterling Clutch Purse

Rarely does a thing of such beauty land on my desk. This most beautiful of purses is the Sterling Clutch Purse from ETTINGER

Smooth black calf leather on the outside, displays outstanding craftsmanship and luxury, but it’s not until you open the purse to reveal an extravagant burst of tourqoise colour from its soft drum rolled leather interior.  It really is the epitome of discreet flamboyance.

The purse feels so luxurious I’m not sure I want to use it as an everyday purse, so on weekdays I’m going for the Ettinger Croco Card Case for cards and notes and leaving the purse to use as a perfect dinner date clutch.

Actually the clutch with its beautiful silver embossed Royal Warrant and Prince of Wales Cipher is on it’s first official engagement this evening.  Dinner with Mr B.

Silver Leather – Style Diary #07

I’ve got a thing for silver leather.  It started last Summer when a lot of brands were using metallics and iridescent looks on leather clothes and accessories.

It was around that time that I got my eye on this bold silver leather Rucksack by Jas MB London. Similar here.

This Summer the high Streets are embracing the Silver look.  Double silver accessories are ok.  But don’t go OTT or overly fussy. Keep bags boxy and shoes clumpy.  No kitten heels or stilettos for this look, it’s more rucksacks, platform brogues, and loafers.

This season I’m loving Grenson’s Emily shoe in Silver and also the tasseled Clara, but at £210 and £215 they may need to wait until payday.

emily-210202_web clara-210184_web (1)

In the meantime, I’m teaming the bag with these preloved loafers from the British Red Cross Shop in Shoreham.

Wear your silver accessories with jeans and a shirt for a dressed up dress down look. Mix blue, grey black and white.  Cooler tones have more show with a little silver.

Now let’s get spacey

Valentines – What Women Want

I love romance but Valentines Day can be tricky.  It’s all got a little bit commercial.  Is it about the biggest bunch of red roses?  Is it about the Michelin-starred meal?  The 5-star hotel or the super bling night out? Meh, more romance, less material fluff….You know?

Here’s my none too costly picks for  a romantic Valentine’s Day…..

1 Flowers – You don’t need to go for red roses and you don’t need to go super expensive.  The roses pictured were £5 from a well-known supermarket.  Tulips and most spring blooms look romantic, remember to take off the sticker and re-wrap if you can in brown paper.

2 Perfumed Candles – Beautiful fragrances set the scene and the mood for a really romantic evening. I try different fragrances all of the time, my current perfume candle du jour is Persian Rose from Spry.

3 Lingerie – What women doesn’t want beautiful undies? These pink rose sets are surprisingly cheap yet very pretty.  From Aldi, I know!

4 Chocolates – Again, us women doth protest about our waistline but on Valentines give us Chocolate or be damned! I’m going old school with Ferrero Rocher.

5 Poetry – I’m just going to pop that one in.  Some of the best verse in the world is penned about love, ditch the terribly sloppy or funny card and go for the real thing, Byron, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, John Cooper Clarke.    Penguin’s Poems for Love might give you some inspiration. If poetry is not your thing try songs with amazing words or meaning. Or write your own!

‘Let me be your electric meter

I will not run out

Let me be the electric heater

You get cold without’

What’s in your bag? Giveaway

Since the age of four, or five.  I’ve always had a fascination with the contents of women’s bags.  Aunts were known to hide handbags rather than have some pesky little four-year-old me rummage through the bag to unearth its magical, sometimes private contents.

I thought this would a fab idea for a giveaway and since my online accessories store Boston&Boston supplies a range of unique luxury accessories I thought I’d bring the two together to give you the chance to win some designer items that you may like to find in your own handbag!

So, let me reveal the contents of my bag………

Purse, keys, phone.  Standard.  Notebook and pencil, I need to write.  Gloves and Sunnies, Great British weather!  Varying amounts of makeup.  Mini Parfums from Miller Harris, Current obsession No 1. Toothbrush. Current obsession No2 for me at the moment turns out to be teeth and gums…..Who’s have known?

On to the Giveaway.  Boston&Boston have stepped in with some rather lovely stationary. Book pen and business card holder from Italian ateliers Fedon 1919.  I love this brand and use it luxury stationary and accessories ALL the time.

What I’d like you to do is to connect with me on social Media by following one or all of my accounts,

Instagram, @diaryofanhonestwoman

Twitter, @anhonestwoman

Then post a picture of the contents of your bag tagging me and including #diaryofanhonestwoman #honestlywhatsinmybag

The best, most quirky, or different photo will be chosen on Monday 1st February 2016.  Competition closes on Monday 1st February. T’s & C’s apply.

Its Not Too Late! Gift Guide

Ok, so I’ll be honest, I started off so well with the present buying thing I thought I had it literally all wrapped up.  However when I’ve taken stock there’s another thing I wanted to buy for Mr B, a stocking filler for my mum, a little something extra for Dad and then my friends children….

If like me you have some last minute gifts to buy don’t worry It’s not too late! Many shops are open until Christmas Eve, so that’s 8 shopping days until Christmas.  If your shopping online many websites are now offering free next day delivery….Although be sure to check first as the last posting day for many is Wednesday 23rd December.

My last present post includes a bright pink Makki purse from Boston&Boston perfect for any lady and a Christmas Bauble kit from Luxury skincare company Sabon.

Then possibly my favourite present for Mr B a Dyson V6 Absolute cordless vacuum, well he did say he wanted a power tool!

Esthechoc’s for the beauty conscious delicious daily chocolate fix (not to mention slowing down the ageing process, this product is too good!), the splendidly named and beautifully fragranced Rhubarb! Rhubarb! Candle from Noble Isle.

if you’ve not got enough Christmas in your beauty regime already then try Arabelle’s Amaretto Lip Balm and Zuzka’s Organic White Chocolate Revitalising Cream.

Hmmm mouth watering!

That’s a wrap!

Sunday Supplement #20 – Men’s Gifts

We all know how difficult men can be to buy for. I find it beyond tricky to buy for Mr B as he runs a menswear brand and has the accessories side of things pretty much covered. So I need to think beyond the obvious ties and socks.

If you’re like me and still shopping online for gift ideas you will be reassured to hear that it’s not too late.  Many stores are still offering free next day delivery up until Christmas Eve.

With that in mind here’s my selection this season for men.

First off this beautiful Italian leather bag from Fedon 1919 its not quite briefcase, not just a man bag, somewhere nicely in between. Buy now from Boston&Boston.

Next these matching mother of pearl cufflinks and dress studs from denisonboston.  I love them (but then I am biased towards the brand.)

How about posh smellies? Luxurious shave creme from Nancy Lo (this is unisex BTW so you can totally steal it!) and beautifully packaged hair pomade from The Old Street Barber Co.

For a little Christmas Day humour these Misfortune Cookies (which I can’t wait to try!)

For the tech man who has everything this Fire TV stick from Amazon and these absurdly good and cheap headphones from Lidl.

That’s it on the men’s front. Keep it simple, keep it smart. #Itsnottoolate

Have a wonderful Sunday

Black Friday Weekend – Mindful Shopping

I’m guessing you have all been exposed to some sort of Black Friday Sale today?

Did you like it? Did you buy?

As a retailer, writer and consumer I’m really not sure.

On the one hand, we all like bargains for Christmas but then I hardly ever pay full price for anything. I always shop around, So why should I buy this weekend?

As a retailer, why should we go into sales in the busiest part of the year?

Hmmm, Its a difficult one, my heart is with what I call mindful shopping, shop local, shop small brands shop well, where you can.  But dont beat yourself up if you do buya new laptop or TV for less.

At Boston&Boston, our online accessories store,  we have placed some items in the sale, for us it was long overdue on some older collections so please shop our sale and grab a bargain while you can.

New and current stock is available, and at the moment we can offer free UK standard delivery and free international delivery.  If you want we can even gift wrap.

Topshop Magnificent Sock Boots

I posted last month about the breadth and genius of this years TOPSHOP Winter Boots Collection.  Leather, decent heels and a reasonable price.  Whilst browsing the Women’s Department of Fenwick Newcastle I stumbled into the Topshop concession.   Then I saw them, black ankle boots made of the softest leather, chunky yet reasonable 3.5″ heel round ish toe, but what grabbed my attention was the way the top of the boot continued up the leg and turned into a sort of leather sock.

32M11IBLK_2_large 32M11IBLK_3_large

I tried them on. The zip skimmed my ankle like a dream then kept on going up my leg, raw leather edge turning into bare skin.  I was somewhere between Victorian London and the Wild West, luckily I was wearing a skirt, they work perfect with a skirt, I’ll say it again, they work PERFECT with a skirt, never before has a leather boot, bare leg and ankle combo worked so well, no hard leather welly tops, no gaping ankle air where the top of your boot is not talking to your leg.

Part Florence Nightingale, part Annie Get Your Gun, I walked around the shop floor, I noted a general comfort in the size of the heel and the length of the sock.  Then the shop assistant said the magic words, “That’s the last pair left in your size, ” and “even the TOPSHOP store sold out yesterday”.

Hearing the calm before the storm Mr B stepped in and offered to pay for them as an early birthday present.  Hallelujah!  There is a God and she’s a TOPSHOP designer.

I give you the MAGNIFICENT Sock Boot

Scarf Love

By far the most useful and loved items in my wardrobe are scarves.

I’ve long been a lover of this silk, demure yet seductive accessory.  A new designer scarf in silk, or silk georgette is my idea of heaven.

It’s the accessory that just keeps on giving, wear it around your neck, draping from your shoulders, carry it from one shoulder, hold it in your hand or tie it to your bag Grace Kelly style.  A scarf will  keep you warm, it keeps you cool in the sun and protects you from the rain.  Hides your modesty when you laugh, mops your tears when you cry.

My Gran never left the house without a scarf, every day she would select a co-ordinating scarf from the bureau add a squirt of perfume and off she would go, ready to face the day.  The scarf is the epitome of finished style.

I’ll bet you The Queen is never without a scarf, she’ll hike the hills around Balmoral as long as she has a trusty head square in her pocket ready at the first gust of wind, to tie around her head.  Who needs a crown when you have a silk scarf?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt’s also the best wardrobe update I know.  A pair of jeans,  a white T-shirt and a scarf are my wardrobe staples, I’ve also been known to wear a scarf as a halter neck top or a dress come summer and whip it off once on the beach to provide a seating or picnic area!

A love a designer scarf, a cool bit of lettering, a slogan or an iconic scarf, I wont say no to Hermes though I favour local designers like Age of Reason and Modern Love.

I’m not quite sure how many scarves I have, I dare not count for fear Mr B puts a halt to my scarf buying capers….Let it be said loud and proud…You can never have too many scarves

Some of the scarves pictured are available on Boston&Boston (and some are now in the sale!)
